SuDS & Landscaping Case Study

Project: Friary Park
Client: London Borough of Barnet
Service: Sustainable Drainage Systems (SUDS) & Flood Alleviation

Loughman was appointed Principal Contractor for the flagship Friary Park scheme, delivering critical flood alleviation and community improvements for the London Borough of Barnet. The project’s core SUDS objectives included the naturalisation of Blackett’s Brook through de-culverting, shaping, and regrading to enhance natural water flow, alongside the construction of a significant wetland feature.

This wetland was specifically designed to provide upstream flood storage, crucial for reducing downstream flood risks, while simultaneously improving local biodiversity and mitigating pollution.

Our comprehensive role encompassed managing the active watercourse with temporary dams and flow diversion systems, installing new culvert slabs and headwalls, and meticulously coordinating with statutory authorities. Loughman successfully navigated complex challenges inherent to live public sites, including adapting designs for UKPN service clashes, implementing constant groundwater management with environmental protection, and addressing ecological risks such as invasive species treatment and tree retention for new habitats. Our stringent environmental compliance, robust public protection measures, and internal/external auditing ensured the successful delivery of this impactful SUDS and flood alleviation project, demonstrating our expertise in complex urban water management and environmental civil engineering.
