Heritage Case Study

Project: Barking Town Centre Conservation – Be First Regeneration
Client: Be First
Service: Heritage Preservation & Public Space Enhancement

Loughman undertook a significant project in Barking Town Centre for Be First Regeneration, aimed at enhancing the connection between the historic Barking Abbey Grounds, the High Street, and the iconic Curfew Tower. Our primary objective was to create a more inviting and accessible public space while meticulously preserving the area’s rich historical significance.

Our scope of works included sensitive public realm enhancements such as creating new dwell spaces with thoughtfully installed street furniture and improved public lighting, specifically for the Grade II listed Curfew Tower and its surrounding landscaped areas. A key heritage aspect involved the careful construction of new pathways through the reuse of existing York stone flags, complemented by new granite sets, ensuring a design that harmonised with the historical setting. Loughman implemented a comprehensive Construction Phase Plan and rigorous RAMS to protect the Curfew Tower and collaborated closely with Pre-Construct Archaeology (PCA) for a watching brief during excavations. This allowed for the careful removal and recording of any archaeological finds, preserving the site’s historical value. The project successfully delivered an enhanced public realm while demonstrating Loughman’s commitment and expertise in sensitive historical preservatio within urban regeneration.
