Sports and Play Case Study

Project: BMX Pump Track
Client: Medway Council
Service: Delivering a New Recreational Sports Facility

Loughman played a pivotal role in the successful construction of a new BMX pump track for Medway Council, transforming a former landfill area (known as woodlands) into a vibrant sport and play facility. The project’s unique challenge stemmed from the site’s history, as no excavations were permitted, necessitating the construction of a raised pump track built entirely above existing ground levels.

Despite a complex collaboration structure where Medway Council engaged a specialist pump track contractor separately, Loughman seamlessly stepped into the Principal Contractor role for the enabling and civils works. We meticulously managed the project’s programming and sequencing to ensure all elements were delivered for a pre-arranged opening day ceremony. Our team effectively navigated challenges such as vandalism concerns, ensuring all plant and materials were securely managed, and dealt with persistent wet weather throughout the construction period, which impacted access. Loughman also implemented an engineering solution from Medway Council’s in-house design team, ensuring that no works breached the underlying protection layers of the former landfill, and proactively installed additional above-ground drainage to address irregular surface levels. Through close liaison with all parties, Loughman ensured the site was fully demobilised and the pump track was ready for its successful opening event on the planned date, demonstrating our capability to deliver complex sports infrastructure projects under challenging site constraints.
