Sports and Play Case Study

Project: Hermitage School Playground Improvement
Client: London Borough of Tower Hamlets
Service: Enhanced Play and Development

Loughman undertook the comprehensive refurbishment and enhancement of the playground at Hermitage School, significantly improving the safety, functionality, and developmental value of the play area for its students. Our core objective was to deliver a superior environment for sports and play. This involved the careful removal of existing damaged play equipment, followed by extensive patching and repair of the existing surfacing.

We expertly excavated and filled freeform areas with tiger mulch and installed a suite of brand-new, engaging play equipment designed to support children’s social, emotional, and cognitive development.

To ensure safety and accessibility, Loughman implemented robust tree protection measures, installed edging kerbs to clearly define play zones and pathways, and reinstated all surfaces with a durable tarmac surface. We executed the project using a phased approach and primarily scheduled works during school holidays to prioritise student safety and minimise disruption to school operations. A proactive site survey allowed us to identify and address all potential hazards, ensuring a truly safe play environment. The successful outcome delivered an enhanced, safer, and more stimulating playground, significantly improving the play experience and supporting the holistic development of the students.
