Railway Infrastructure Case Study

Project: DLR Phase 2 Drainage
Client: Transport for London
Service: Enhancing Railway Infrastructure & Stormwater Management

Loughman undertook a critical railway infrastructure project for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), focusing on the renewal of stormwater management drainage systems across 20 locations along the DLR’s South and East Routes. The primary objective was to address inadequate existing drainage that was causing uncontrolled surface water run-off, leading to staining of viaduct columns and damage to station infrastructure.

Our comprehensive scope involved the complete overhaul of these drainage systems. Loughman demonstrated exceptional project management, ensuring no accidents or RIDDOR reportable incidents, and maintaining close communication with the client through regular progress meetings. A notable achievement included a design change for bespoke drainage hoppers, resulting in smaller, lighter units that facilitated safer installation from MEWPs while still meeting DLR specifications. We also managed complex logistical aspects, working closely with local businesses and residents when operating on private land adjacent to the DLR boundary. The project was completed on programme, further demonstrating Loughman’s capability to deliver essential railway infrastructure upgrades that directly contribute to the longevity and integrity of the rail network, all whilst adhering to stringent safety standards and efficient communication protocols including the use of DLR’s ASITE project management tool.
