Railway Infrastructure Case Study

Project: DLR Track Access Points
Client: Transport for London
Service: Track Access Point Installation: Enhancing Rail Network Access

Loughman successfully delivered a critical railway infrastructure project for the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), involving the installation of a new track access point along the DLR northern line between Devons Road and Langdon Park stations. This essential infrastructure enhancement was designed to facilitate future access for rail-mounted vehicles onto the track, enabling subsequent maintenance and development works across the northern line.

As Principal Contractor, fully compliant with CDM Regulations 2015, Loughman’s comprehensive scope included the construction of an approximately 1000m² concrete compound adjacent to the track. This compound featured precise levelling and integrated drainage to ensure no surface water impacted the railway. A key element was the installation of a Road Rail Access Point (RRAP) Panel, purpose-built to allow safe vehicular access onto the track. Further vital railway infrastructure works involved the installation of new troughing for service protection alongside the railway, covered by road plates, and robust palisade fencing with access gates to secure the compound. Loughman also installed acoustic fencing to mitigate noise for nearby residents and a vehicle restraint barrier parallel to the track, safeguarding the rail line from potential damage. This project showcased Loughman’s expertise in delivering specialised and secure railway infrastructure solutions within a live urban rail environment.
