Parks Case Study

Project: Surrey Canal Linear Park
Client: London Borough of Lewisham
Service: Transforming Derelict Space into a Vibrant Urban Park

Loughman played a pivotal role in the long-term transformation of the former Surrey Canal route into a vibrant linear park. Our project converted a previously derelict section, once a neglected dog exercise area, into a key part of a combined walkway and cycleway, significantly enhancing urban green infrastructure.

Our comprehensive scope included extensive regrading and the installation of a substantial granite seating wall, notably featuring an engraved poem, providing both amenity and artistic value. We laid new tarmac paths with granite edgings, incorporated SUDS-compliant paving, and installed new stairway accesses to improve connectivity. For recreational play, we created new sandpits and decking areas. The project also delivered a new street lighting scheme, new fencing, and significant soft landscaping with wildflower meadows and tree planting. Loughman meticulously managed the complex public interface, implementing phased works with continuous segregation to ensure public safety, particularly near an adjacent primary school. Despite a programme delay due to an uncharted gas main, our proactive management mitigated issues. The project achieved excellent outcomes, transforming a neglected area into a high-quality, accessible, and aesthetically pleasing urban park.
