The works comprised extensive vegetation clearance, removal of accumulated silt to expose the original channel formation, restoration of the concrete-lined channel, temporary over-pumping and water management, reconstruction of planter areas, environmental improvements and landscape reinstatement. Temporary water management systems allowed sections of the channel to be isolated and restored progressively while maintaining control of water throughout the works.
Following vegetation clearance, exceptionally wet conditions created a significant challenge in managing the saturated excavated silt. Loughman reviewed a number of potential methods before developing a practical solution using sandbag containment cells. The excavated material was progressively stockpiled within the cells, allowing it to drain and consolidate naturally before being removed using conventional plant and transported to licensed waste facilities.
Environmental considerations were carefully managed throughout the project due to the aquatic habitats and wildlife present within the channel. Loughman worked alongside environmental specialists during delivery, with vegetation clearance and construction activities coordinated around the ecological requirements of the site.
Following completion of the engineering works, the planter areas were replanted and the project concluded with a community planting day involving local residents. The completed works restored the channel and surrounding landscape, combining civil engineering, water management, environmental enhancement and public realm improvements within a residential urban environment.
