Highways and Public Realm Case Study

Project: Storey Gardens Walking Route Improvements
Client: Canterbury City Council
Service: Highways and Public Realm Improvements

T Loughman & Co. Ltd was appointed by Canterbury City Council as Principal Contractor to improve a key walking route through Canterbury city centre.

The works covered Church Lane, Stour Street, St Peter’s Lane and St Radigunds Street, creating safer and more accessible pedestrian connections. The scheme included the reconstruction and repair of footways and crossings, kerb realignments, tactile paving, bollards and localised junction improvements.

A combination of Indian sandstone paving, asphalt, resin-bonded and high-friction surfacing was installed. Existing granite setts, conservation kerbs and Staffordshire blue kerbs were retained and reused where suitable, helping the improvements sit comfortably within the surrounding streets.

The project was delivered in phases across several busy city-centre locations. Traffic and pedestrian management was adjusted as the works progressed to maintain access for residents, businesses and pedestrians. Careful hand excavation and specialist surfacing were also undertaken around existing trees, buried services and retained materials.

The completed scheme provided safer, more accessible walking routes while retaining materials that contributed to the character of the surrounding area.
