Public Realm Case Study

Project: Chatham Station Public Realm Improvements
Client: Medway Council
Service: Complex Public Realm and Highway Regeneration in a High-Footfall Transport Hub

Loughman served as Principal Contractor for the significant public realm improvements around Chatham Station, enhancing its vital connection to the town centre, waterfront, and surrounding areas. Our comprehensive scope of works transformed these spaces, including extensive highway redesign, high-quality concrete and natural stone paving, and new asphalt surfacing.

The project dramatically improved the station forecourt with drainage modifications, taxi rank relocation, and the introduction of dedicated taxi lanes and drop-off bays. Furthermore, we revitalised the wider public realm by decluttering the town centre, installing modern benches, new trees, wayfinding monoliths, and decorative bollards, alongside robust Hostile Vehicle Mitigation measures. Loughman meticulously managed complex challenges inherent to working in a high-traffic urban environment, implementing careful phasing to minimise disruption for commuters and businesses, and maintaining continuous liaison with all stakeholders. Our expertise in handling high-quality materials and our collaborative approach with Medway Council, Network Rail, and specialist sub-contractors ensured the successful delivery of an enhanced, more accessible, and visually appealing public space for Chatham.
