Public Realm Case Study

Project: Cockpit Arts
Client: Cockpit Arts Ltd
Service: Artistic Public Space Transformation

Loughman was contracted by Cockpit Arts Ltd to undertake comprehensive landscaping works for the front and rear studio yards, transforming existing outdoor spaces into aesthetically pleasing and highly functional public realms. The project’s core objective was to create a seamless and visually compelling environment through intricate paving, integrated drainage, and thoughtful landscaping.

Our scope of work involved the precise installation of four distinct types of high-quality paving – including Grandpot Pavers, Reclaimed Granite Sawn Cube Cobbles, Hambleton Grey Porcelain, and Country Hexagon White Terracotta – all expertly laid with Kinley Fort edgings to achieve a technically sophisticated and visually cohesive effect. Extensive excavation and sub-base preparation ensured durable foundations, including a reinforced concrete base for the rear yard. Loughman also constructed a robust retaining and seating wall, featuring hollow dense blocks with rebar and a decorative buttermilk rendering, along with elegant wall trellis installations. Below ground, trial holes identified existing services, allowing for targeted drainage repairs including slot drains and perforated pipes. Elements of soft landscaping completed the transformation, with wildflower mixes, reclaimed mural materials, barrel planters, and the installation of new trees and shrubs. This project perfectly demonstrated Loughman’s ability to deliver high-quality, complex public realm enhancements that blend functionality with artistic design.
